Google’s Nano Banana: A Tiny Twist in the Text-to-Image Race

In the fast-paced world of AI image generation, the focus has often been on creating larger, more powerful models capable of producing stunningly realistic and complex visuals. Google’s Imagen has long been one of the leaders in this space, celebrated for its ability to transform high-level text prompts into breathtaking images. However, a new player has emerged from Google’s research labs, and it’s challenging the “bigger is better” philosophy: Nano Banana.

Nano Banana, officially known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, isn’t a direct replacement for Imagen. Instead, it’s a specialized, highly efficient image editing and generation tool that has already become a viral sensation. Its core strength lies not in creating intricate new worlds from scratch, but in its remarkable ability to understand and modify existing images with speed and precision. This makes it an ideal tool for rapid prototyping, creative ideation, and on-the-go image manipulation, a niche where its larger counterparts might be overkill.

The key difference between Nano Banana and Imagen is in their primary purpose. Imagen is the master of generating new, high-fidelity images from text prompts, perfect for professional artists and designers. Nano Banana, on the other hand, excels at tasks like turning a simple photo into a hyper-realistic 3D figurine, seamlessly blending multiple images, or maintaining a consistent character’s likeness across different scenes—all with a simple text command. It’s a new paradigm for creative workflow, making sophisticated image editing accessible to everyone.

To Create Your Own 3D-Figurine

People discovered Nano Banana could create what are called “Nano Banana 3D Figurines” which are simple to make and can be used on  Instagram, Tik-Tok, and threads (See image below). Create your own using Google’s own official example prompt. First go to Gemini 2.5 Flash Image then click on the “+” to upload your headshot photo. Then use this prompt (as is or you can modify):

“Create a 1/7 scale commercialized figurine of the characters in the picture, in a realistic style, in a real environment. The figurine is placed on a computer desk. The figurine has a round transparent acrylic base, with no text on the base. The content on the computer screen is a 3D modeling process of this figurine. Next to the computer screen is a toy packaging box designed in a style reminiscent of high-quality collectible figures.”
